What Is Color Calibration and Why Is It Needed?
Color calibration is the process of configuring settings specific to a machine-and-ink combination so that print output stays consistent with target color values.
What Color Calibration Does
A machine's output can shift over time or between jobs depending on the ink, material, print head and ambient conditions. Calibration measures these variables and readjusts the machine's color output against reference values to maintain consistency.
When It's Done
Calibration is repeated when switching to a new ink series, when the material changes, after print head maintenance or replacement, and at regular intervals.
How It Relates to Profiling
Calibration adjusts the machine's color output to reference values; profiling then defines the color behavior of a specific ink-material combination for that calibrated state. The two are sequential, complementary steps.
What to Keep in Mind in Practice
How often calibration needs to be repeated depends on production volume and how often materials or inks change; the process is usually carried out with technical service support.
