What Is Eco-Solvent Ink and Where Is It Used?

Eco-solvent ink is a system where pigment carried in a solvent-based medium settles into the material's surface coating and fixes as the solvent evaporates; because of this, it's used on coated surfaces like vinyl and banner material rather than textiles, mainly in outdoor applications.

How It Works

In eco-solvent ink, pigment sits in a solvent-based carrier; during printing, the solvent slightly dissolves the coating on the material's surface, letting the pigment settle into that layer. The solvent evaporates over time, leaving the pigment permanently fixed on the surface.

Why It Works on Specific Surfaces

Unlike systems that penetrate fabric fiber, this fixation depends on the material's surface coating; that's why eco-solvent ink is used on vinyl, banner material and similar coated surfaces rather than textiles.

Why It Suits Outdoor Use

The pigment settling chemically into the material's surface is the main reason this print is preferred for signage and advertising surfaces used outdoors; having adequate ventilation in the print area for solvent evaporation is part of the production process.

What to Consider When Choosing

The real question when evaluating eco-solvent ink is whether the print goes on a coated surface rather than textile, and whether a wide-format print area is needed; if both conditions apply, eco-solvent becomes a suitable option.
